How to Ride on the Bicycle Handlebars

While the majority of bicycles are designed for one rider, that doesn't meant that you can't bring an extra person along for the trip. In fact, it's relatively common to see two riders on a bike made for one, usually with one rider perched on the handlebars while the other pedals the bike in the normal style. This precarious riding position may look difficult, but it's fairly simple to accomplish with the proper preparation and balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Instruct the person who will pedal to get on the bicycle in the traditional riding position. He is responsible for holding the bicycle steady while you climb on the handlebars. His feet should be planted in a wide stance on each side of the bicycle and his hands should be on the handlebars so he can hold them steady to prevent wheel movement when you climb on.

    • 2

Stand in front of the handlebars and place one leg on either side of the front wheel. You should be facing away from the person pedaling.

    • 3

Reach behind you and place your hands on the handlebars for balance.

    • 4

Slowly shift your weight backwards, centering your butt in the middle of the handlebars. Make sure your position is stable enough that you won't slip off when the bike makes a turn.

    • 5

Move your feet away from the front wheel of the bicycle.

    • 6

Alert the person pedaling when you're secure and ready to go.

    • 7

Keep your body centered as he begins to pedal, being careful to avoid any sudden movements or shifting from side to side.
