How to Build a Bicycle Wall Rack

If you have family members or roommates who ride bicycles, you understand that all those bikes take up a lot of space. Not only that, a bunch of bikes casually parked together inevitably become a jumbled, disorganized mess. Save space and keep your bicycles organized by building a simple wall rack out of a 2-by-4 and bike hooks.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of your rack. You'll need 12 inches for each bike plus 8 to 12 inches of extra space on the ends.

    • 2

Use a saw to cut a 2-by-4 to the determined bike rack length.

    • 3

Pre-drill pilot holes down the center of the board every 12 inches for the hooks. Use a drill bit that's slightly smaller than the thickness of the screw threads on the hooks.

    • 4

Mark the wall for the height of the bicycle rack. Use the measurement of the length of the longest bike plus 3 inches to determine how high the rack should be hung. You're adding 3 inches to ensure that the bicycles will hang straight and off the ground.

    • 5

Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall where the rack will be hung.

    • 6

Screw the 2-by-4 to the wall using 3 1/2-inch wood screws. Use two screws at each stud.

    • 7

Hand-screw the bicycle hooks into the pilot holes. Bike hooks are shaped to fit around a tire, are rust-resistant and have a vinyl coating to keep the hook from scratching your rims. Tighten them so the hook is positioned horizontally.

Hang the bikes by setting the front tire in the hook and letting the bikes sit upright against the wall.
