What Is Dynamic Climbing Rope?
-
The Market
-
There are more than a dozen well known rope manufacturers on the market today. All of these companies have to perform a series of tests before a rope is approved for retail sale. The International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, UIAA, is the safety organization that will review the test data and give final approval.
Specs
-
Every dynamic rope is different. The materials, braiding, diameter and length all vary. This means every rope has a different specification. Some have more stretch--meaning more elongation--that will determine the impact force felt by the climber. Diameters vary and they determine how a rope will handle, as well as its expected lifespan.
Specific Application
-
All dynamic ropes have a specific application depending on what type of climbing you're doing. Read the manufacturer's specifications for each rope and see which applies to your activity.
Buy New
-
Always buy a new rope. Dynamic ropes damage easily with improper storage and care. Battery acid and glues eat rope fibers, weakening the rope's integrity.
Care Requirements
-
Dynamic ropes should be stored in cool, dry, dark places. The sun will bleach fibers and weaken the rope. Ropes can be washed in warm water. Daisy chain and place in a mesh bag. Wash with mild non-toxic soap in a front-loading machine. Hang dry out of the sun, in a place such as your garage. Never use a drying machine. No matter how often you use your rope it should be retired after five years. Look for other signs when deciding when to retire a rope, such as sheath abrasion and spongy spots in the core.
