Climbing Rope Technique

There are many ways to climb a rope, but the simplest and most efficient method, which is used by the United States Marines and physical education classes across the country, depends on particular rope placement and simple muscle movements.
  1. Rope Placement

    • The hanging end of the rope should go between your legs from the front, around the back and outside of your right leg and over the top of your right foot. You can then use your left foot, stepping across the right, as a brace for the rope.

    Arm Action

    • Place your hands one above the other on the rope at about head height, and hoist yourself up until your hands are at chest level, or until your elbows are flexed at a 45-degree angle. After bracing with your legs, reach up to head height again and repeat the process.

    Leg Action

    • As your body rises with the hoist provided by your arms, allow the rope to slide around your right leg and between your feet. When the arm lift is complete, step down hard with your left foot on top of the rope to ensure that it does not slip. This brace provides stability while your arms reach for a higher hold. Always keep your feet locked on the rope when your arms are reaching for a new hold; when your arms are pulling, allow the rope to slide.
