How to Clean Nylon Rope

It is important to clean nylon rope to prevent a reduction in life, strength and effectiveness of the rope. Each year nylon rope will shrink in length and should be measured regularly to verify the true length. Clean and inspect nylon rope on a yearly basis, or more often when the rope is heavily used. Two options are available for cleaning nylon rope depending on your preference.

      Uncoil all ropes and stretch them out on clean pavement. Lay long rope in an accordion or back and forth style.

      Remove debris and large pieces of caked on dirt and mud.

      Wash the rope in a top-load washing machine with cold water and a mild detergent for delicate clothing. Use 3 oz. of liquid fabric softener with 3 gallons of water during the rinse cycle to lubricate the rope.

      Spray the rope with a pressure washer (approximately 2500 PSI). Start in the middle of the length of rope and work to each edge. Push the rope together (hourglass shape) while spraying to prevent it from flying away. Placing one foot on the rope will also hold it in place. Flip the rope over and repeat the cleaning process to fully clean the entire circumference of the rope.

      Air dry the rope in non-direct sunlight. Examine the entire length for worn areas on the rope. Cut the rope into two separate sections at these points, if necessary.

      Measure all rope sections and label the rope length.

      Coil and wrap each rope length, keeping the ends visible. Apply a 4-inch end dip to the rope ends if desired. Rope or tool dip can be purchased at a hardware store. Verify the dip will not damage nylon rope prior to purchasing.
