How to Tie an Alpine Butterfly Knot
The alpine butterfly is easy to tie and has diverse uses. Because it can be loaded in three directions, it is commonly used for creating tie-in points in the middle of a rope or isolating a damaged section of rope in an emergency. It is also used for equalizing anchor points for rappel lines. Its shape is readily recognizable, which is a good feature because an incorrectly tied knot will be obvious.

1
Start with a bite (or fold) of rope.
-
2
Give the bite a half twist. Notice that the rope will cross over itself once.
-
3
Add another twist. There will be two cross over points.
-
4
Separate the loops and cross over points.
-
5
Fold the bite underneath the cross points.
-
6
Bring the bite over the second cross.
-
7
Push the bite through the loop between the crosses.
-
8
Dress (or adjust) the knot, so that it is neat. A dressed knot is stronger and easier to recognize as being tied correctly.
