How to Tie a Figure Eight on a Bight

The figure eight is the all-purpose climbing knot. Climbers use it to create a place for their carabiner to clip into the rope. Tying a figure eight in a bight, a doubled-over length of rope, makes a sturdy point to clip into. You can tie this knot anywhere along the bight.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a couple feet of rope so the rope is doubled. This is called a bight.

    • 2

Holding the folded over end of the bight in your left hand, cross the end over the front of the double-thick rope.

    • 3

Bring the top of the bight under the doubled rope, passing it back to the side it started on.

    • 4

Bring the top of the bight back to the front and slide it through the loop created at the top of the bight. Pull the knot tight.
