How to Remove Rust From Skates

Ice skates are composed of metal blades attached to the bottom of boots. Skating is very popular, in sports such as ice hockey and figure skating. Wearing skates on outdoor ice or forgetting to wipe down your blades will result in rust forming on the blades. Rust can damage the blades by making them dull. Fortunately, rust can be removed from skates. You will still need to sharpen your blades after removing the rust.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the blades thoroughly with a soft cloth, to remove any dirt, oil or moisture. Skate blades should be wiped down after each use.

    • 2

Apply some skate blade oil to a clean cloth. Skate blade oil is useful for preventing rust on blades, as well as removing rust.

    • 3

Wipe the cloth over the blades, so that the blades are completely covered with the skate blade oil. Allow the oil to absorb into the blades.

    • 4

Rub a scouring pad gently back and forth over the rust spots. You may need to occasionally apply more skate blade oil onto the blades, to prevent the scouring pad from scratching the blades.

    • 5

Dampen a clean rag with water once the rust is removed. Wipe the damp cloth over the blades to rinse off the skate blade oil.

    • 6

Wipe a towel thoroughly over the blades, until the blades are completely dry. Failure to dry the blades will cause them to become rusty again.
