Research skates before you head to the stores. Decide on what type of skating you'll do--fitness, hockey or extreme (trick) skating. Price the different brands models online and read the reviews, which should include comments about comfort and performance.

2
Bring the extra pair of socks with you to the skate shops or sporting goods store. The socks should be thicker and longer than regular socks; soccer socks are ideal. You may find a pair of skates that are comfortable with regular socks, but it's good to get a sense of how your foot feels inside the boot in both situations.

Ask the store clerk for a few different sizes, starting with your shoe size and then going up a half size and one full size. If your initial shoe size is unknown, use the store's foot measuring device. Try each pair on with and without the extra pair of socks. Tighten and stand up.

Move your toes. According to The Inline Planet, there is an important rule for determining a good fit. The toes should be able to touch the front of the boot slightly when you are standing straight up, but they should not not be able to touch when your knees are bent. Take a few strides inside the store (if possible) and lean forward, backward and side to side to determine if your feet are comfortable inside the boot in all positions.
