How to Choose a Size for SCUBA Fins
Things You'll Need
- Optional: dive booties or neoprene socks
Instructions
-
Fin Size and Fit
-
1
Select a fin that is the same size as your shoe size (for men) or one size smaller (for women).
-
2
Unbuckle the fin strap, remove the plastic foot pocket insert and don your dive booties if it is an open-heeled fin (use neoprene socks for closed-toe fins).
-
3
Insert one foot into the foot pocket of one fin. Stop pushing your foot into the pocket when the top edge of the pocket touches close to your ankle.
-
4
Check that your toes are not touching the bottom of the foot pocket and there is not a large gap on each side of your foot.
If your toes reach the bottom of the foot pocket, your fins are one size too small. If there is too much room between your toes and the bottom of the foot pocket, the fins are several sizes too small and/or your boots may be too bulky for the foot pocket (such as dry suit boots). -
5
Check that the sole (bottom edge) of the fin does not extend past the heel of your boot and that your booted heel does not extend more than 1 1/2 inches past the sole.
-
6
Attach the fin strap and tighten it so that the fin is snug. Repeat this process with the other foot.
Shake Test
-
7
Sit down and extend one foot (with fin) out.
-
8
Shake your finned foot side to side and up and down.
-
9
Notice whether the fin feels very loose, rubs or pinches. If it feels very loose, tighten the fin straps or try a smaller size; if it rubs or pinches, try a larger size.
-
10
Repeat with your other finned foot.
