What to Look for in Snorkeling & SCUBA Fins
-
Price
-
Set a budget before going shopping for fins. If you dive regularly, you should spend more money for fins than someone who dives a few times per year or just for fun. Also, if you need fins for snorkeling, you do not need to spend as much as someone who scuba dives. Snorkelers spend most of their times at the surface rather than diving deep.
Comfort
-
Comfort is most important thing to remember when choosing a pair of fins. If the fins feel awkward or uncomfortable on your feet, you will not be able to swim well in them. You should choose the correct fin length and how the fin straps to your foot. Full-foot fins are typically found on snorkeling fins, and most scuba fins have an adjustable heel strap.
Make sure the fin length is comfortable, as well. Force fins are much smaller than traditional fins but can provide the same kicking power. Ask your scuba gear retailer if he has demo fins to try before you purchase a pair.
Fin Features
-
Modern fins have high-tech designs to make diving more effortless. Split fins, also called Bio-Fins, are cut down the middle of the fin and are said to require fewer kicks to swim the same distance. Other fins have cutouts and angles to make your kicks more efficient. These fin features can be helpful when diving, but if they are not comfortable, they will not produce the desired results.
