What to Look for in a Jr Goalie Hockey Helmet
-
Certification
-
Select a helmet that is HECC (Hockey Equipment Certification Council) and/or CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certified. These independent companies are used by USA and Canada Hockey to certify hockey equipment for safety and reliability.
Size
-
Goalie mask sizes are equivalent to hat sizes and/or the circumference of the head at the forehead. Measure the head with a measuring tape and compare the measurement in inches to the sizing chart provided by each manufacturer to find the right size.
Correct All Around Fit
-
Even if you think you have the right size helmet based on measurements, trying it on is the only way to be sure. To fully protect a goalie, the mask should not move on the head when moved from side to side as this can both obstruct the goalie's view and the ability to fully protect the head from puck deflections and collisions.
Most helmets come with pads that can be inserted into the helmet and an adjustable chin strap to dial in a more perfect fit so look for a helmet with both for longer use.
Cages
-
Under USA Hockey Rules, no one under the age of 18 may play with a "cateye" goalie mask, so look for a mask with a standard cage to comply with the rules.
