Information on Longboards

A longboard is a form of skateboard used for predominantly for transportation. Whereas skateboards are typically known for performing tricks and stunts, the length of the longboard makes stunt riding difficult.
  1. History

    • The longboard version of the skateboard has its roots in early skateboarding that was inspired by U.S. surfers in the 1970s. The longboard version of the skateboard is shaped to resemble a surfboard.

    Beginners

    • The longboard skateboard is often used by people relatively new to skateboarding. The longer, wider body allows for a smooth ride that requires little effort as a single push moves the board long distances.

    Size

    • The size of a longboard varies by use and can be between 24 and 80 inches in length. When used as a form of transportation, the longboard can be between 39 and 50 inches in length.

    Wheels

    • Longboard skateboards use larger wheels than shorter models. The polyurethane longboard wheels measure between 60 and 90 mm in diameter and are manufactured to a soft consistency for a smooth ride.

    Other Uses

    • The most common other uses of longboards are for racing in downhill and slalom races where small cones are positioned along a downhill course that the rider must navigate to complete the course.
