How to Steer a Snow Sled

1
If your sled has a steering wheel or some other steering mechanism, simply turn it to steer. Many sleds - particularly runner sleds - have built-in steering contraptions.
-
2
Lean to turn. Leaning to one side will cause that side to dig deeper into the snow, increasing the friction and turning the sled.
-
3
Brake on one side with your foot. By sticking one foot out and down into the snow, you can quickly turn the sled.
-
4
Combine techniques. You may have to lean while dragging a foot in the snow in order to turn, particularly on a heavy toboggan with several passengers.
-
5
Stick both feet in to the snow to slow down the sled. If you are going too fast, it may be difficult to turn. Knowing how to slow down is an important part of controlling your sled.
-
6
Lean off the back of the sled. With disk-shaped sleds in particular, it can be very hard to turn at all. The best way to get your sled back under control is to lean off the back into the snow, stopping the sled.
