How to Install a Drive Belt on a Snowmobile

Sometimes while riding a snowmobile, the drive belt can rip or break apart. It is the equivalent of getting a flat tire on the highway. Without the belt, your sled isn't going anywhere. Luckily, they are very easy to change and most snowmobiles have a spare either on the belt guard or under the hood. Within minutes, you can have the old belt off and a new one on with ease.

Instructions

  1. Changing a snowmobile belt

    • 1

Open the hood and the side cowling on the snowmobile and locate your spare belt.

    • 2

      Engage the parking brake.

    • 3

      Remove the belt guard.

    • 4

Grab the belt and pull it toward the rear of the sled, angling slightly to the left. As you pull the belt it will open up your sheaves and the belt will slide off.

    • 5

Place the new belt on the front sheave, release your parking brake and pull the new belt onto the back sheave until it slides on. Replace the guard, close the hood and fire up your snowmobile.
