DIY Paddleboard Paddle

Paddleboards are basically surfboards in which the rider uses a paddle to navigate. These boards are used for beginners or for those who want to slow down and enjoy the view. The paddle for a paddleboard is just as important a tool as the board itself. A simple homemade paddle requires a few supplies that can be found at the local hardware store and an afternoon of hard work.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a teardrop shape onto the 12-by-6-inch piece of wood using a pencil. If you are not able to draw the traditional paddle shape use an existing paddle and trace the shape onto the wood.

    • 2

Cut out the paddle shape using a jigsaw.

    • 3

Sand the edges of the paddle with multiple grades of sandpaper. Use larger grades of sandpaper first and end with a higher grade for a smooth finish.

    • 4

Make a 1/2-inch-wide center cut three or four inches deep into one end of the wooden rod.

    • 5

Place wood glue inside the center cut on the wooden rod and slide the paddle into the rod as far as it will go.

    • 6

Drill a hole near the top of the wooden rod, away from the paddle one inch in diameter to attach the handle. The hole needs to be drilled parallel to the top of the paddle.

    • 7

Insert the dowel rod through the drilled hole to create the handle. Add wood glue to hold the handle in place.

    • 8

Sand the paddle after all the glue has dried to smooth and shape the paddle further.

    • 9

Apply at least three coats of waterproof varnish to the paddle. Allow the varnish to dry completely between coats.
