Standup Paddleboard Instructions

Stand up paddling is a relatively new sport that involves a person standing on top of a surfboard and using a paddle to move the board through water. It is a full body workout achievable by kids and adults alike. Unlike surfing, stand up paddle boarding is not just limited to the ocean; you can paddle in any body of water. In fact, beginners should start in calm water such as a lake or river until they have properly mastered the technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a flat body of water such as a lake, calm beach or pond for your first attempt. Lay facedown on the board and paddle into water that is at least waist deep.

    • 2

Climb into a standing position by first pushing your chest up and then moving one foot up on the board. Hold the paddle in one hand and then move your other foot so it is shoulder width apart from your first foot.

    • 3

Place the paddle in the water on one side of the board. Keep your body straight and as balanced as possible. Put the paddle into the water and pull it through the water with a nice, even stroke.

Alternate moving the paddle through the water on different sides of the board. Remember to pull the paddle with a smooth, even stroke.
