How Are Quad Fins Set Up?

Surfboards come in various styles, sizes and fin setup. Quad fins, as their name suggests, consist of four fins that provide more speed while riding the waves. According to Surfscience.com, more fins under the board aid the surfer in directing the board with better amount of control and with less response time. Setting up the quad fins of your board is an easy process that requires just one tool.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the fin boxes or plugs of your surfboard and loosen all the screws with a fin key. Do not remove the screws all the way; loosen just enough so that they're not screwed into the fin slot.

    • 2

Determine proper fin positioning. The side fins have a slight angle pointing out when attached to the board. The brand logo or writing on the base of the fin should be facing out.

    • 3

Arrange the quad fins by placing the large side fins in the front and the smaller side or trailer fins in the back.

    • 4

Drop the fins straight into the fin box or plug so that they are sitting flat. Tighten and secure all screws without over-tightening. Gently wiggle each fin upward and downward; if it moves, tighten some more. If it stops moving, the quad fins are completely set up and ready for use.
