Fasten the leash securely to the surfboard. Next, place the leash around the ankle of the foot that you will use as your back foot. Make sure that it is neither too tight or too loose. If you are unsure, the back foot usually corresponds to the same side of the hand that you use. For example, if you are right-handed, it will likely be your right ankle.

Take the board out until you are in water that hits waist deep in height. Jump up on the board with both feet and head towards a wave. Surf the wave comfortably before going any further. You must have control of the surfboard before proceeding with surfing waves at an angle.

Put your weight on the back leg. At the same time, rotate your upper body. Use your hips to shift the angle of the surfboard. Take the weight off of the back leg and onto the front leg. Stay in this position and ride the wave at the new angle.

Adjust your body so that the weight is almost totally on the front leg. Keeping the weight on this leg will keep you surfing after changing angles.
