    • 2

Look into becoming a safe surfing certified instructor. Know that there is no definitive national certification for surfing. However, various respected surf organizations will certify someone as "safe" by industry standards, such as the 2005 established National Surf Schools and Instruction Association (NSSIA).

    • 3

Take a few surf lessons to see how other instructors teach surfing. Make mental notes of what works or doesn't work for you during the lesson to help you structure your teaching style.

    • 4

Solicit your services to friends first to test out your teaching abilities. Charge low fees starting out to compete with the various surf school organizations; or apply within those organizations for a position as a surf instructor; they will usually give you an interview and a surfing evaluation.

Take out an ad in the yellow pages or local travel magazines in your area for your services. Deliver quality surfing instruction at reasonable prices and you will no doubt build an adequate clientèle fairly quickly.
