How to Install an Ocean & Earth Bike Rack

One issue with surfing is that the surfboard, often being upwards of ten feet long, can be awkward to carry around. This is particularly true if the surfer either does not own a car or does not want to use it, yet lives too far from the beach to comfortably carry his or her board. The Ocean & Earth Company, a store that specializes in surfing gear, carries a rack that allows the surfer to carry the surfboard on a bicycle. It can be assembled and mounted easily with common hand tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the midpoint of all four arms together, with the two shorter, straight arms inside the two longer, bent arms, using the bolt supplied with the rack. The rack will have the general shape of an X when assembled. Hand-tighten the bolt.

    • 2

Attach the two shorter arms to the bicycle seat. Do this by removing the bolt securing the seat post, aligning the holes in the arms with the holes for the bolt, and replacing the bolt. Hand-tighten it.

    • 3

Attach the two longer arms to the rear wheel mounts. Remove the rear wheel nuts, slide the longer arms over the wheel axle and replace the nuts.

    • 4

Slide a bolt and a nylon spacer between the two long arms. Slide the bolt through one arm, fit it through a nylon spacer and the included foam rubber piece and then through the other arm. Attach the nut.

    • 5

Repeat this process with the two short arms.

    • 6

Securely tighten all nuts and bolts. The rack is now ready to use.
