How to Buy a Custom Surfboard

A custom surfboard can unlock your potential on the waves. If made correctly, a custom surfboard can be fitted to your style, ability, a particular wave type and preference. Follow these steps to buy a custom surfboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Search online for a customer shaper on sites such as Valley Isle Surfboards, Bufo and Surfboard Shack. Custom Surfboards contains a comprehensive directory of custom shapers (see Resources below).

    • 2

Talk to the shaper to learn something about his personality. Look for a craftsman who's willing to experiment with his boards. You don't want one who is set in his ways and won't try new designs.

    • 3

Ask about the shaper's skill set. She should be adept at using cad shaping programs and machines, but you want someone with an additional expertise in hand shaping.

    • 4

Find out how much experience the shaper has. Ask him about his training and background. You want someone who understands the entire surfboard shaping process. Have him show you pictures of his past work.

    • 5

Pick someone who is open to collaboration. Discuss your design ideas and work together to come up with a custom surfboard you'll be happy with. The type of board you get will depend on several things including the dominant wind conditions, local break, your height, weight, budget and athletic ability.
