How to Make a Wooden Blowgun

A blowgun is a projectile weapon consisting of a long, hollow tube -- traditionally wood or bamboo -- that fires a small dart. The dart is propelled by the force of air blown through the tube. Blowguns are used by native tribes in South America, Southeast Asia and the Pacific as a means of hunting. The Cherokee tribe of the southeastern United States is known for making blowguns out of river cane. A small, homemade blowgun can be made from a piece of bamboo.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a straight, 12-inch long section of a bamboo pole; saw this piece from between two of the bamboo pole's section joints. A piece of bamboo with a 1- to 2-inch diameter works best.

    • 2

Remove any obstructing material from inside the bamboo piece. Use a long, thin chisel.

    • 3

Sand the ends smooth using sandpaper. The mouthpiece end of the blowgun must be particularly smooth.
