How to Make a Spear Out of a Stick
The spear is one of the oldest, most primitive weapons ever created by humans. It is also one of the easiest to make, as the simplest version of a spear is basically a sharpened stick. A spear can be used for many purposes, such as protection, hunting or fishing. A basic straight spear can be made quickly and easily, and can used as a sturdy walking stick or to even catch dinner while camping.

1
Cut a straight sapling tree down to the length you desire for your spear. Most spears are 5 to 6 feet long and are about the diameter of your thumb.
-
2
Sharpen the tip of the spear down to a barbed point using a knife. Do not make the tip too thin or it could break.
-
3
Fire-harden the tip by holding it 2 to 3 inches from a hot bed of coals until the tip is brown. This will add strength to the spear tip.
