1
Create your tinder ball. Search for dry glasses, leaves or bark shavings and make a pile the size of a grapefruit. Hold the tinder in your hands and compress it into the size of a racquetball. It needs to be springy, but not so loose that it falls apart.
-
2
Collect your kindling. Small twigs, sticks and tree branches work well. Construct your kindling into a pyramid shape, starting with the smaller pieces and building over them with the larger. Make sure you leave a large hole in the side of your pyramid for the lit tinder ball.
-
3
Find a nearby area without any obstruction of the sun. You will be returning a flaming tinder ball back to your kindling, so don't walk too far off.
-
4
Hold the magnifying glass approximately 6 inches in front of the tinder ball. Move the glass closer and farther from the ball until the bright circle of light on the tinder ball is a small as possible. The smaller this circle of light, the more concentrated the sun's heat will be.

5
Gently blow on the tinder ball once it begins to smoke. This is the aspect of fire-making that often requires the most practice. Too much air will blow the fire out, but too little will starve the tiny flame of the oxygen it needs to grow.
-
6
Blow slightly harder as the smoke thickens. Eventually, the tinder ball will develop a flame. Rotate the tinder ball so that the flame is on the bottom of the ball, causing the flame to burn upward into the center.
-
7
Take your burning tinder ball back to your kindling pyramid. Gently push the ball into the center of the kindling through the hole you created earlier. You may need to push the burning ball with a stick to avoid burning your fingers.
-
8
Gently blow long, steady breaths into the center of the kindling pyramid. The kindling will eventually catch fire. Once the larger sticks and branches are burning, add larger logs.
