1
Find some wire or cable to begin the construction of your snare. If you are planning on catching more than one raccoon, then you will want to make sure you have enough cable or wire to make more than one snare. You will most likely only get one use out of the snare, because when a raccoon is caught, the snare will kink.

2
Select a spot in which to set your snare. You'll want to make sure you select an area in which raccoons are known to travel. If you are in a field or wooded area, check thickets and thick grass for paths that could signal raccoon activity. It would be useful to know how to read animal tracks. This will ensure that you can verify that raccoons have been in that area, or else you might catch rabbits or other animals.
-
3
Make a loop in the wire or cable so that it has about a six-inch circumference. Make sure that the loop is loose enough so that when the animal steps through it and gets snared, the loop will tighten on the animal's leg. It should look like and have the same function as a lasso.
-
4
Place the loop in the middle of the path. It should be anchored to something solid, such as a fence or a tree. Even a root can act as an anchor. Also, if there is a big enough rock nearby, this can also be used as an anchor for the snare.

5
Leave your snare in place overnight and check it the next day. Chances are that you will have captured a raccoon. However, be prepared for the possibility of having captured a rabbit or some other type of animal. In addition, the likelihood of the animal being alive is pretty good, so make sure that you're prepared to deal with the animal when you come in contact with it.
