How to Change a Horse's Name

All racing horses are registered with a name to an official horse registry. There are a variety of these registries worldwide. It is sometimes impossible to change a horse's name once he's officially registered, especially if he's raced under that name. However, there are exceptions.

Instructions

    • 1

Research essential information about the horse if you are not the original owner. Find out if the horse ever raced and with what association he is registered.

    • 2

Contact the registration agency to find out whether it allows name changes. Some registries don't allow name changes but permit nicknames to be added.

    • 3

Mail in the required information and payment. Most registries require a signed letter requesting a name change (put the desired new name in the letter), the official registry papers and a fee.

    • 4

Look at the registry's naming regulations because they are generally fairly restrictive. Don't waste your time submitting a name that the association prohibits.
