How to Get Tickets to the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is held every May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the center of the thoroughbred racing world. It's the longest continuously-held sporting event in America. Thus, it's very difficult to get reserved tickets to the Kentucky Derby.

Instructions

    • 1

Request a reserved seat in writing at least one year in advance. The deadline is September 1st of the previous year. Seating is very limited.

    • 2

Buy a general admission ticket on the day of the race. This will get you standing room only space in the infield or paddock area.

    • 3

Go online to an independent ticket broker to buy a ticket to the Kentucky Derby. They will charge up to ten times the ticket value, so be careful. Prices range from $430 to $4500 each, depending on where you want to sit.

    • 4

Line up early on race day if you want to get a prime spot. Because general admission is all standing room only, it's up to you to elbow your way to an area where you can see the race.

    • 5

Opt for standing along the fence in the paddock area. This is where you'll get the best view.

    • 6

Know that the infield area gets rowdy as people get drunk. The area near the clubhouse turn is supposed to be a little calmer.
