How to Buy a Retired Racehorse

You can buy a retired racehorse, and give it a great home for the rest of its life. You may even be saving him it from being sold for slaughter.

      Visit your local racetrack and talk to trainers and owners who may have horses to retire. If they don't have horses for sale, they may know someone who does.

      Look online at websites dedicated to placing retired racehorses in homes. Many times you will only have to pay a small adoption fee for the horse. You may be required to follow certain guidelines such as having the appropriate means to provide for for the horse's safety.

      Examine the horse and determine if it is capable of performing to your needs. If you want to turn it out to pasture for the rest of it's life, this isn't as important. If you will be riding or showing the horse, you don't want one with scars or major injuries. Many retired racehorses are still sound and in good shape; they just need retraining.

      Have a licensed veterinarian examine the horse before you purchase it. Have him administer x-rays on each leg to look for old injuries. You must know about any injuries so you can take care of them.

      Pay for the horse. Arrange to have it delivered to your home, or take it home with you immediately.
