How to Become a MLB Scout

We have all read the scouting report. Player A has this tool or that tool, he is a sure prospect. Have you ever wondered where those reports come from and who writes them? Well, there is an army of jugs gun carrying, clipboard holding soldiers and they are called MLB amateur scouts. If you want to join the army this is how.

      Unlike the golden age, today there is actually a school for aspiring scouts. Hosted by the MLB Scouting Bureau, the school takes place in Arizona every fall. There they will arm you with everything you need to know, but getting a job is up to you.

      Baseball sense: Having played the game or coached is a benefit, but not required. The best avenue is to become an assistant scout. This is similar to an intern and unpaid, but this is a crucial step. Being an assistant scout will get you in the door, the rest is up to you.

      People skills: A good scout must work with people. A talented player has many options and you must convince him your option is the best. Also, build a network of local coaches. It is impossible to see every player, knowing the coaches will help funnel the talent to you.

      With so many players, numbers, names and reports, being organized is crucial. Your supervisor is relying on you to make a decision. Make sure you answer every answer he/she may have and leave no stone unturned.
