Information on the Louisiana Superdome

The Louisiana Superdome was built in the city of New Orleans, primarily to accommodate its NFL team, the Saints. It has also hosted a number of other sporting events, as well as witnessing one of the darker passages in New Orleans' history.
  1. Construction

    • The Superdome cost $134 million to build. It first opened its doors on August 3, 1975.

    Dimensions

    • The Superdome stands 273 feet tall and covers a 13-acre area. It is currently the largest building of its type in the world.

    Seating

    • The Superdome seats slightly more than 70,000 visitors, though that number may be less when events do not justify such a size.

    Championships

    • In the first 35 years of its history, the Superdome hosted six Super Bowls, three BCS Championship Games and four NCAA basketball championships.

    Katrina

    • During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Superdome housed 30,000 people seeking shelter from the hurricane and the floods that followed. The structure was damaged by the storm and reports surfaced of crimes being committed by occupants within.
