Study the defense and your own playbook thoroughly. If you know what everyone is doing and where they are going on the field on a play, it helps tremendously with field vision. Tomlinson stays in the clubhouse long after others have gone home to make sure he knows everything about a play and the opposing team. With this knowledge, he understands where the holes in the defense are and where they may develop.

Keep your head up and scan the defensive line for openings. It is human nature when you near a potential collision to lower your head. However, you'll lose your field vision and may not spot that opening in the defense. Tomlinson is always looking for the extra yard or the opening in the defense. You will constantly see him scanning the defense for a possible escape route on every play, and he usually finds one.

A good way to improve peripheral vision is get some old glasses and put a piece of tape in the middle of each lens. This will force your eye to look around the tape and improve your peripheral vision.
