1
Pick a team. Most people whose favorite team don't make the playoffs pick a team from the 12 teams that do make the playoffs. It's fun to pick a team from the wildcard game because they have to furthest to go to make it to the Superbowl. Of course, it's important not to get attached to the team. NFL playoff football is single elimination, so it will be necessary to choose another team if the team you picked a looser.

2
Understand the game. It's hard to enjoy something that you don't understand. Even if football formations and defensive packages don't interest you, make an effort to learn the positions. Knowing who is playing quarterback, running back and wide receiver is helpful when the team is on offense. Knowing the corners, linebackers and defensive ends are helpful for appreciating defense.

3
Leave room for junk food. Dieting during the playoffs sucks the enjoyment out of the experience. The playoffs are all about chips, pizza, subs, and buffalo wings. The playoffs start just after everyone has made a New Year's Resolution to lose weight and get healthy. Enjoy some of those football foods, but use moderation so that resolutions aren't thrown totally offtrack.

4
Watch the pre-game show. The sports commentators will interview players and offer keys to the game. They'll basically tell you what to watch for during the game. They will also highlight how the teams got to the playoffs and allow you to connect with the teams and actually care who wins.

Invite other non-football fans over. There is such a thing as too much football for a non-football fan. If you're having friends over, be sure to invite other non-football fans over. This way, you'll have someone to talk to when the football becomes a bit overwhelming or it's a defensive low-scoring game and you're bored out of your mind.
