How to Do a Leg Spin

Some Americans may think a leg spin is some kind of Pilates exercise, but this is not the case. A leg spin is actually a type of pitch, or "bowl," used in the game of Cricket. It is similar to the curve ball in American baseball; the aim is to throw the ball straight, then have it curve back around after it bounces.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the ball in your pitching hand with your index finger and middle finger spread out against the ball, as if you were making a "two" or "peace" sign, then position your thumb on the ball immediately opposite the two fingers. This is your basic grip for the leg spin.

    • 2

Place your ring finger against the side of the ball while holding it in the aforementioned grip. You will use this finger to spin the ball as you release it during the pitch.

    • 3

Start the pitch with the thumb -- and the fingers opposite the thumb -- positioned on the sides of the ball, and your ring finger underneath. Imagine you are holding an overlarge shotglass in your hand with your thumb and first two fingers on the side of the glass and the ring finger underneath to support it.

Throw overhand. Spin your hand right before you release it, so the back of your hand faces you. This puts a spin on the ball, causing it to hook after it bounces.
