How to Create a Car Rally

A car rally is a type of road race that takes place on roads, such as a public or private road. Rallies don't take place on any type of track but go down pre-planned and carefully routed roads. The twists and turns of the roads are therefore unpredictable in a way that racing on the same tracks over and over again is not. Participants are usually given a co-driver with instructions as well as a map. Holding your own car rally requires careful planning and work.

      Plan a route using a map and your car. Drive along several different routes and decide which one will give your riders the most challenge. Make sure you scatter check points along the routes for the drivers to rest, gas up and take a bathroom break.

      Write the instructions down with your pencil and paper, making them a series of clues or riddles. This will challenge your racer more than instructions such as "turn left at the Sunoco."

      Get proper racing clearance from the local authorities. Go to the police station in town, including any county or state offices and also to the town hall. Find out how much it costs to rent the roads and close them down for a race.

      Advertise your rally in the local press to find drivers for the event. Set up a small fee for each driver and use part of this to pay for the winner's purse. Use the rest to fund the rally or send it to a charity, if you have one.

      Create rules for your rally to make the rally scoring more precise and challenging. For example, a driver can earn points for using less gas to get to the next check point. You can also rate them based on time and speed.

      Cut check point and route signs out of wood using your saw, hammer and nails. Draw directions on the sign using your markers.

      Plan a method of starting the race depending on your racers. For example, a high number of racers will have to start in a staggered fashion, such as a minute or two behind the other cars. These cars will get a handicap equal to the staggering time.

      Raise funds on the day of the race by charging a small fee or donation and selling hot dogs and soda for attendants. Use these funds to pay for the event or send them to your charity.
