How to Become an Arena Football League Official

Since Jim Foster created the game on the back of a manila folder in the 1980s, arena football has grown steadily in its popularity. This slightly different version of NFL football has even created stars in the Superbowl. Becoming an official in arena football is similar to many other games. It requires diligence and the support from a community of experts.

Keep in shape. Officials have to run with the big boys. It is important that they be able to get up and down the field and see the plays first-hand. An official that can't keep up will be left in the dust.

Climb the professional ladder. It may be necessary to start out in college or even high school leagues. Officials have reputations just like the players. Building a body of work that is known for fairness is key to being noticed by the right people.

Join an association. NASO, the National Association of Sports Officials, is a good place to start. They provide training and support at all levels of the officiating structure. NASO may be reached at naso.org. There are also a variety of online communities for officials. Perform a Google search and use football official communities as keywords.
