1
Practice your jab. A jab is a quick punch from your resting position straight out and snapped back in to your body quickly. If this punch is done right, it will hit the opponent straight on, hard and quick. Practice this punch in front of the mirror until you have it right. Talk with your trainer about your jab positioning and execution.

2
Work on your balance. Though boxing does not appear to be graceful, it is in fact dependent very much on being able to move swiftly and gracefully out of the way of the opponent's hits. Balance should be practiced both in the ring and on balance beams or in the way of dance, ice skating or other classes incorporating the art of balance. A great exercise for balance is to tie a string between your ankles during a practice match.

3
Develop and maintain a number of combination punches. These should stem from the jab and other basic punches. Work with your trainer to develop signature combos, as this will help to catch your opponent off guard.

4
Work hard. None of these three key things are useful if you do not train and work out every day. You need to maintain a prime physical condition and boxing skills to be successful in becoming a better boxer. Another smart choice is in the quality of trainer you work with. They should have years of experience in the boxing industry and show a pattern of success with the boxers they have worked with.
