Places For Games & Sports in North Carolina

North Carolina is in the southeastern United States, a region that takes pride in its athletic teams. The Tarheel State features athletic facilities for professional and collegiate sports. Some North Carolina athletic facilities have been open since the mid-20th century. Collegiate sports in North Carolina usually occur at the respective universities' or colleges' campuses.
  1. College Basketball

    • The Dean Smith Center is on the University of North Carolina (tarheelblue.cstv.com) campus in Chapel Hill and hosts basketball games for the North Carolina Tarheels. Completed in 1986, the Smith Center was built in honor of Dean Smith, head coach of the Tarheels from 1961 to 1997. The Smith Center seats 21,750 spectators.

      Located at Duke University (duke.edu), the Cameron Indoor Stadium hosts men's and women's Duke Blue Devils basketball games. Cameron Indoor Stadium opened in 1940, making it one of the oldest operating arenas in North Carolina. The basketball arena has seating capacity of over 9,300.

    Professional Sports

    • The Carolina Panthers (panthers.com), a National Football League franchise team, play their home games at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. This NFL stadium was built in 1996 and seats approximately 73,700 people. Bank of America stadium has 158 luxury suites which accommodate 10 to 40 fans.

      Situated in uptown Charlotte, the Time Warner Cable Arena (timewarnercablearena.com) is home to the Charlotte Bobcats (nba.com/bobcats), a professional National Basketball Association basketball franchise. This basketball arena opened in 2005 and seats over 20,000 fans. The Charlotte Sting, the Queen City's Women's National Basketball Association team, also plays at this arena.

    College Football

    • Raleigh, the state capital, is home to McCarter-Finley Stadium. This football stadium is on the campus of North Carolina State University (ncsu.edu) and hosts the home games for the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Built in 1966, McCarter-Finley Stadium has a seating capacity for 55,571 spectators.

      The Demon Deacons football team, representing Wake Forest University (wfu.edu) in Winston-Salem, play their home games at BB&T Field. Opened since 1968, BB&T Field seats over 31,500 fans for games. As a private school, Wake Forest University was the sole financier for building this stadium.

    Minor League Baseball

    • The Durham Bulls (durhambulls.com), based in Durham, are the only Triple-A minor league team in North Carolina and they play their home games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. This minor league baseball stadium seats approximately 10,000 spectators and opened in 1995. Some of the seats are in warehouse-style structures behind the outfield walls.

      Open since 2005, Newbridge Bank Park is in downtown Greensboro. The stadium hosts home games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers (greensboro.grasshoppers.milb.com), a Single-A minor league team. Newbridge Bank Park has a seating capacity of 7,500 fans.
