How to Play in a Keeper Fantasy Football League

Keeper fantasy football leagues are for true diehard fantasy sports player. Once you join a league, you are committing to remaining in the league for at least three years and you must retain players from one year to the next. A regular fantasy league is a year-to-year proposition, and therefore requires less of a commitment. However, the keeper league is more challenging and can be more entertaining if every team stays active.

Instructions

    • 1

Gain access to a fantasy football keeper league. You can join a random league online or you can ask people you know if they belong to a league with any open slots (see Resources below).

    • 2

Research the players for the initial draft. If you join an already established keeper league, find out which players the other owners are keeping. Don't waste valuable research time on taken players. Also, ask the commissioner of the keeper league for the rules for entrants because each league has its own set of regulations.

    • 3

Formulate and rank your list of available players according to the league scoring rules. Some leagues put more value on touchdowns in their scoring system and some value yardage gained more. After you receive the information, rank each available player accordingly.

    • 4

Participate in the keeper league draft. Remember that some of the players your draft will be on you team for next few years. Therefore, choose not only the present season but seasons to come as well. Mix in younger players with older vets so that you have replacements as players retire.

    • 5

Play the season and then decide which players you want to keep after the season. Usually a keeper league allows you to keep at least three players. Be sure to monitor any off-season activity, like which teams draft which players in real life, if there are injuries or off the field and concerns for any of the players on your roster.

    • 6

Designate which players to keep as the new season begins. Then draft new players to fill the remaining positions on your team.
