How to Get a Sponsor for a Youth Sport

Childhood is one of the most exciting and adventurous times in life. It's also a time when physical activity is encouraged by families and schools and kids participate in sports. Youth sport leagues need money, often donated by coaches, parents, teachers and communities, in order to thrive at a recreational or competitive level. Many youth team seek sponsorships, mainly from businesses and professionals willing to donate money and provide other resources for your cause.

Determine the amount of sponsorship your team needs by evaluating your budget and goals. This will help determine the types of sponsors your team needs. For example, if your team needs money for new shirts, speaking with a few local businesses may bring in all the money you need. If your team needs money for an out-of-state trip to a tournament, you may need numerous larger sponsors to reach your financial goals.

    • 2

Find out as much information as possible about the business or individuals you plan to ask for sponsorship money. Research what the business does, who its target customers are and how it is doing financially. This helps secure the sponsorship. For example, a business selling scrapbooking supplies may be trying to attract more mothers to the business. By sponsoring a youth sport, the business will benefit from mothers coming to see their kids play.

Prepare a well-worded letter or email to send to the sponsor. Print or type it on the official letterhead of your team or your team's league. Include information on your team, its goals and successes. Make your team sound like it is worth sponsoring. Include information on how the business can sponsor the team, such as the person to make checks payable to, and include your contact information and when funding is needed. Be honest about why your team needs sponsorship money.

Send the email or hand deliver the letter in person. If delivering a letter in person, ask to speak to the manager or the owner of the business and give the letter directly to him to ensure that he know who you are and what opportunities you're providing the business with.

Keep your sponsors and potential sponsors updated. Inform them of your continued need for support, your successes and your season highlights. Make your sponsors feel like they are part of your team and that their contribution is needed and appreciated. Let them know exactly what their sponsorship money is being used for. Offer to send photos of the team for display at the business so that customers can keep up with the team, too.
