How to Preserve an Autograph on Fiberglass

Preserving an autograph on fiberglass can be done relatively easily and will protect it from accidental removal through cleaning. If you have been fortunate enough to obtain an autograph from a famous person, you will want to make sure you keep it for as long as possible. Light, sun, dirt and other factors can deteriorate the ink over time, but following this procedure can permanently preserve the autograph and the fiberglass surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area around the autograph using mild soap and water. Depending on the type of ink used, cleaning the actual site would be a good idea, but not if you feel doing so may remove the signature. Ensure the site of the autograph is free of any dirt, lint, dust or any other foreign matter.

    • 2

Pour some clear coat liquid into the reservoir of your paint sprayer. If the type you have acquired is too thick to be sprayed evenly, it can be thinned by adding small amounts of xylene. Put on your respirator before beginning your spraying.

    • 3

Spay a single coat over the fiberglass panel where the autograph is located. Spray the entire surface or panel the autograph was written on, to obtain an even finish. For example, if you have an autograph on a fiberglass hood of a car, spray the entire hood and not just the autograph.

Wait a few minutes for the clear coat to settle and fill any gaps in the fiberglass surface before applying a second coat. Multiple coats can be applied for further protection.

    • 5

Allow the clear coat to cure in a dust-free environment before touching. This usually take a few hours, depending on the level of humidity in the environment. Wait at least two weeks before buffing or polishing the clear coat to ensure it has fully cured and hardened.
