Compound bows are a source of recreational fun as well as an ideal hunting weapon. Available in a in a range of designs, technologies and sizes there is a bow to fit everyone's needs, including kids. Kid's compound bows are small-scale versions of adult bows including most of the same features and accessories.
  1. Safety

    • Kids need adult supervision when handling and shooting compound bows as they are extremely dangerous weapons. The arrow tips and broad heads are sharp and can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly. Kids should never point a bow at a target they do not intend to shoot, including people, pets, cars and buildings. It is critical that they stay behind other shooters until they are done shooting as not to accidentally be in the line of fire.

    Target

    • Targets are an essential item for practicing or target shooting with a compound bow. Choose a commercial target or a homemade target that will withstand the penetration force of your equipment. Two sets of two bales of straw or hay make an ideal target for kids due to the stopping power and large area. Always check the area behind the target you're shooting to ensure it is safe. Start a short distance away from the target until your comfortable, then move back in short increments.

    Equipment

    • Care and maintenance of your bow and equipment is a necessary part of archery shooting. Perform a pre-shooting inspection for any damage to the bow, strings or arrows. If you see any signs of damage or wear bring it to the attention of the adult who is supervising your shooting. Store your compound bow in a locked bow case that protects it from damage and prevents other children from playing with it. Choose a compound bow with the correct draw length and that you can pull back comfortably.

    Shooting

    • Shooting a compound bow can be an intimidating feat so kids should always have the help of an adult until they feel comfortable by themselves. Keep your grip on the bow handle firm but not very tight and keep your string pull slow and steady until at full draw. Wearing an arm guard will prevent injuries from the string striking your arm upon release. Hold the bow at draw steadily and do not release until you are accurately aiming at the target.
