1
Obtain a hickory stave or sapling that is at least 6 feet long. You can purchase a stave from most stores that specialize in archery supplies or, if you have hickory growing in your area, you can look for a sapling of the appropriate size. If you use a sapling, be sure that it's long enough and that it is flexible, not brittle.
-
2
If you found a sapling, use your knife to strip off the bark. Sand the entire length of the wood smooth. You should do this regardless of whether you are using a sapling or a purchased stave to prevent slivers.
-
3
Use the knife to carve notches into each end of the bow. The notch should be approximately one inch deep.
-
4
Tie the bow string through one of the notches. Ensure that it is secure enough to withstand weight and pressure.
-
5
Bend the bow slightly and tie the other end of the bow string to the second notch. You may have to trim your bow string to get the right tension. When finished, your bow should be slightly bent but still allow room to draw it back. Experiment with different tensions to get it just right.
-
6
Decide where you want the grip of the bow. This will largely be determined by comfort. Apply wood glue to this spot and wrap the leather strip tightly around the hickory bow. Allow to dry completely before attempting to use your bow.
