How to Build Longbows

Longbows are a type of bow known for its length and the powerful force behind its shots. The longbow is traditionally about the same height as the individual who is shooting the weapon. These were primarily weapons used for war and have been used by Native American tribes, some African tribes, and some Europeans from the Mesolithic time period. You can make a longbow of your own and learn the art of firing this ancient but effective weapon.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a sapling that is at least 5 to 6 feet in length. Make sure the sapling branch you use is thin and bendable, but not so thin that it will snap easily. Once you find a good sapling, cut it down with your knife.

    • 2

Use your knife to strip the bark off the sapling. Take some low-grit sandpaper and sand the sapling lightly until it is smooth.

    • 3

Carve a notch in each end of the bow staff with your knife. Make the notch an inch deep into the bow.

    • 4

Take a piece of nylon string and tie it around one end of the bow in the notch you just carved. Stretch the string down the length of the bow and tie the string tight at the opposite end of the bow. This should make the bow bend slightly at the ends.

Apply some wood glue to the middle of the bow. Take a leather strap and wrap it tightly around the middle of the bow where you applied the wood glue. This is the bow's handle.
