Serving Tools for Bowstrings

The serving on a bowstring refers to a tightly wrapped layer of thread. The thread is used to protect heavy wear sections of the string. It is also used to attach aftermarket accessories like release loops and peep sights. Tools are not required for serving a bowstring, but several are available to assist with the process.
  1. Serving Thread

    • Serving thread is available in nylon, braided and flat options. Nylon and braided thread are common for compound bows with release loops, but flat thread provides a smooth surface for finger shooting. The serving thread is available in multiple diameters without any guidance about the proper diameter. This is because the diameter of thread is chosen based on preference. Large diameters are bulky but add extra protection and durability. Small diameters are slick and stay out of the way but are less durable. Dental floss is a common tool in the archers bag because it is lightweight and effective as serving thread.

    Serving Jig

    • The jig is a simple tool used to hold the spool of serving thread. The jig uses a rod to hold the thread, and tension is applied to create even wraps around the bowstring. The jig also uses a crease to align the tool on the string. The tension makes the jig easy to control, and tight, even wraps are the result. Serving jigs are not required to tie in a section of serving, but they are a valuable tool and make the task much easier.

    Bowstring Separator and Spreader

    • The bowstring separator is used before the serving is applied. The separator is used to create space between the multiple cables on a compound bow. The space is necessary when wrapping the serving thread on the bow. The thread may be hand-wrapped without a separator, but most jigs will not fit between the cable gap. The bowstring spreader is another valuable tool for items like peep sights. The spreader pries the bowstring into multiple strands, and the sight is inserted between the strands. The serving is applied to the sight and at each end of the spread string to prevent the spread section from continuing.

    Extras

    • In addition to the standard tools, a razor blade, pair of scissors, lighter and instant glue are valuable tools for serving bowstring. The razor blade and scissors make it easy to cut, trim and remove sections of serving thread. The lighter is used to burn and melt the ends of the thread for secure connections. And the glue is applied to knots in the serving thread. The glue is used by many archers, but it will damage the bowstring on contact. Be sure to only apply glue to the knots on the serving thread.
