Rope
-
As the primary lifeline in mountain climbing, no climber should attempt to undertake this outdoor sport without rope. A climber can use the rope in keeping the climbers attached to each other or tie it to the cliff to prevent himself from hitting the ground in case he falls. Rope for mountain climbing, made of strong nylon cords, should be able to withstand both heat and light. Climbing ropes are categorized into single, twin and half ropes. A mountain climbing rope should be approximately 150 to 200 feet long with a diameter of at least one-half inch. When buying rope, make sure to get a durable and flexible one. If you see signs that your rope is wearing, replace it immediately. Choose a dry-treated rope to prevent it from absorbing water, since wet ropes tend to be heavier. Non-dry ropes are suitable only for dry conditions.
Shoes
-
Buying the right pair of mountain climbing shoes will make a big difference in your mountain climbing adventure. Shoes used in mountain climbing are specialized to give the climber a better feel on the rocks. Climbing shoes stick to rock surface so the climber can cling better to it, so the footwear should offer breathable comfort against your skin for good moisture management. It is very important to buy the right climbing shoes for you, ensuring they're snug and fit. Make sure they do not cramp your toes and have very little give. Buy your shoes from a reputable store and ask for help from a knowledgeable attendant. Shoes for mountain climbing should be an all-around, all-purpose shoe with stiff soles and high-cut leather uppers to protect your ankles. Try several different mountain climbing shoes to determine which one fits you best.
Helmet
-
It is important to wear a helmet during a mountain climbing adventure, since this safety device can protect a climber from falling debris, loose rocks or climbing gear. A helmet can also protect a climber's head if the climber falls while taking a route. Different helmets have varying purposes, so select a helmet specifically designed for mountain climbing. Mountain and rock climbing helmets are usually available in two types: foam interior helmets and harness suspension helmets. Foam interior helmets are more popular because of their lighter weight but, harness suspension helmets are more durable.
