Rope Ladders Used in Mountain Climbing

Mountain climbing is a technical sport that takes training, skill and proper gear in order to be done safely and efficiently. Gear used in mountain climbing includes special rope, harnesses and clips called carabiners. Rope ladders are also used to aid in technical climbs or for training and rescue purposes. Knowing how to properly install and use mountain climbing gear is essential before testing it out in the field.
  1. Aiders

    • Aiders come in a variety of styles. They are usually made of nylon. Aiders, or etriers as they are also called, have a central rope that has a reinforced clip loop on one end, and some have one at the bottom as well when it is necessary to slip two aiders together. Loops are attached to each side to form steps. Aiders can have any number of steps, but most come with normally five or six. They are typically used on big walls where there are not sufficient cracks or grips for climbers to utilize for the climb.

    Fidget Ladder

    • Fidget ladders are also called Jacobs ladders. They can be made to varying size and degrees of thickness for mountain climbing as well as for courses and play structures. Fidget ladders can be made exclusively of nylon rope or be reinforced with hardwood rungs for added climbing ease. Fidget ladders are especially useful for emergency situations or when a quick ascent or decent is necessary. A fidget ladder is appropriate for all skill levels.

    Bachar Ladder

    • A Bachar ladder is made from nylon rope and PVC pipe. It is used for training mountain climbers in order to strengthen the upper body. Climbers hang the Bachar ladder from a tree or suspend it from some other bar and climb it using only their hands. Though it is possible to make a Bachar ladder at home, they can also be purchased online and from mountain climbing supply stores.
