How to String a Compund Crossbow

Changing the string on a compound crossbow can be performed by an archer if they own a bow press or have access to one. Restringing a compound crossbow can be done by one person but an extra set of hands will definitely make the process much easier. If you do not have access to a bow press, then take your compound crossbow to an archery shop and have them restring it for you. Do not attempt to restring a compound crossbow without the correct tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the old bowstring that is currently on the crossbow and make sure that it is not too warn and likely to break, which could potentially cause an injury. If there are warn out spots on the bowstring watch them while you're changing, in case it snaps. Using a bow press will reduce the likelihood of a warn out string breaking during the restringing process, but always wear eye protection when swapping out bowstrings, as a safety precaution.

    • 2

Place the crossbow limbs into a bow press. Use a certified or approved bow press to avoid voiding your warranty. Use an adjustable press and slowly add pressure to the limbs to create slack in the bowstring.

    • 3

Inspect the new string for manufacturing flaws.

    • 4

Wax the new string so that it will be easy to install (this helps the string to last longer).

    • 5

Install the new string by following the criss-cross pattern of the old string. Remove the old string as you install the new one.

    • 6

Inspect the crossbow. Check the stock, trigger, pulleys and limbs, make sure that everything is in proper working condition.

    • 7

Release the bow press tension on the crossbow limbs slowly to remove the crossbow from the press. Inspect the bow to make sure it did not get bent in the press.

    • 8

Test out the new bowstring by firing the crossbow at an archery range. Make sure the crossbow fires smooth and straight.
