What Is a Race Car Wrap?

Most auto racing vehicles, regardless of the form or racing, have race car wraps on the surface. Race car wraps are sizable decals made from vinyl material and laminates. They firmly attach to the vehicle's surface in order to alter the appearance of the vehicle's exterior. Many professional race car wraps are strikingly detailed and to the naked eye appear to be part of an actual paint scheme.
  1. Function

    • Race car wraps consist of wording, car numbers, logos, and any personalized outline the driver or car owner may want. Many race car owners display sponsors and company logos on a custom race car wrap.

    The Process

    • The length of the application process varies depending on the sophistication of the designs. Less intricate designs can be conceived and installed within a day or two. However, a highly sophisticated design may take anywhere between 10 days to a full month before the wrap is installed.

    Application

    • Thoroughly wash the vehicle prior to the application of the wrap. This process is essential as it eliminates dirt build up that would otherwise remain under the wrap. Professionals will meticulously apply isopropyl alcohol and other cleansers to the car before they apply the wrap.

    Removal

    • A race car wrap may remain on a car as long as six years if it is properly maintained. However, the wrap is removable. Removing the wrap, or a part of it, will not damage the body or paint. Isopropyl alcohol needs to be applied to any area of wrap that needs to be removed.

    Maintenance

    • Most professional race car wraps do not peel or flake. The wraps must be cleaned with water and car wash soap whenever dirt and dust begins to build up on them.
