- Phillips screwdriver
- 5/8-inch wrench

Strip the lawn mower to its frame. You will need to use a Phillips screwdriver and a 5/8-inch wrench to unscrew all the screws and bolts on the fenders and hood.

Remove the cutting deck. Most riding lawn mowers have a few bolts and an engine belt that attaches the cutting deck to the lawn mower. The official rulebooks declare that the deck must not be attached during races.

Fortify the engine chassis by welding metal bars around it. This will keep the chassis in place when scraping and battling against competitors.

Disconnect the governor. The governor is a clip that runs along the gas line that limits the speed of the engine by limiting the amount of fuel the motor can take in at one time. By removing the clip, it will increase the speed of the lawn mower.

Decorate the lawn mower with paint and decals.
